After world’s cheapest car Tata Nano, India, the second largest growing economy has the world’s cheapest tablet PC readied. Unvieled by the Indian Human Resource Development minister Kapil Sibal, this poor man’s iPad is expected to be priced at about $35 (INR 1,500). This access-cum-computing device is scheduled for an early 2010 release for students and teachers to begin with, but could be eventually owned by public at large.
The Linux operated touchscreen tablet will possess all the functions of a high-end tablet that with lesser speed and memory though. The computing device is packed with features like Internet browsing facility, PDF reader, video conferencing and computing abilities like Open Office, SciLab, etc. The tablet will be capable of playing both stored and streamed media files while its hardware will be flexible enough to entertain new components on requirement.
The tablet PC developed by students from Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Science is designed for students in Universities and colleges with a motive to improve the country’s literacy rate. For the Sibal was quoted saying that in a few months, with emergence of new technology, the price of the tablet could be scaled down to $20 and then $10.
